The court scheduled a hearing in the case of the former presidential candidate Uladzimir Niklajeu on 25 July.
Mr. Niklajeu informed Charter97.org:
“I received a summons to appear in court on 25 July. I think that Iryna Khalip, Mikalai Statkevich, Zmitser Dashkevich, I and other political prisoners will be released and rehabilitated. Unfortunately, it won’t happen on 25 July. We cannot hope for anything good with these authorities. But I would hope for such outcome, as everyone does. The nature of the Lukashenka’s regime remains unchanged in spite of the changes in the EU policy towards Belarus. I don’t see anything strange here,” the chairman of the civil campaign Tell the Truth said.
On May 2011, Niakliaeu was given a two-year suspended sentence. The judgement was pronounced by judge of Minsk’s Frunzenski district court Zhanna Zhukouskaya. The former presidential candidate was found guilty of violating part 1 of article 342 of the Criminal Code (organising or preparing the actions that breach public order, or active participating in such actions).
The Minsk city court upheld the decision of the Frunzenski district court on July 22, 2011.
Uladzimir Niklajeu Many times requested to institute criminal proceedings in connection with the beating of which he was a victim on 19 December 2010, but all his requests were dismissed.
