Vasil Parfiankou spends his birthday in prison. Vasil is in custody of prison No. 6 in Baranoviche. He was sentenced for alleged breach of parole conditions.
In February 2011, Vasil Parfiankou was sentenced to four years of imprisonment under Par. 2 Art. 293 of the Criminal Code (participation in mass riots) for involvement in the 19 December 2010 post-election protest. He was later pardoned by the President’s decree in August 2011
After his release, Vasil Parfiankou continued civil activities and was repeatedly detained for involvement in protests in support of Belarusian prisoners of conscience that are still held in prison.
In January 2012, the authorities established a preventive surveillance program against him. Every day from 8 pm to 6 am he was forbidden to leave the place of residence, and once a week he had to report to the police station.
– I was strictly guarded, the police would show up a few times during the night. One evening I went to the store to get cigarettes, at that time the officers appeared to control me – he told the court.
The prosecutor stated that Vasil Parfiankou had violated the regime of preventive supervision thrice. The first time was when the former political prisoner was late for registration at a supervising authority. Besides, Parfiankou was absent from home twice when the police visited him – he was out shopping. On 19 April the activist was informed that a criminal case under article 421 of the Belarusian Criminal Code had been initiated against him.
On 29 May 2012 former Belarusian political prisoner Vasil Parfiankou was found guilty of violating the terms of preventive supervision, and sentenced to six months’ imprisonment. On July 24 the Minsk City Court rejected the appeal and left the sentence unchanged.
Parfiankou’s case was considered by the infamous judge Siarhei Bandarenka, who on November 24, 2011 sentenced Ales Bialiatski, Chairman of the Human Rights Center “Viasna”, to 4.5 years in prison.
