Julia Chigir

Julia Chigir is a wife of a political prisoner, Mikalay Chigir, the former Prime Minister of Belarus and mother of Aliaksandr Chigir. Julia is a lawyer by profession, she defended her husband in a court.

Chronicle of repression 

In 2000, a court in Minsk found Julia Chigir guilty of committing a crime under the article 363, part. 2 of the Criminal Code (resisting militia officers). The case concerned an incident of 19 May 2000. On that day in court in Minsk, where the trial against Julia’s husband was taking place, the judge was to deliver the sentence. A lot of people gathered in front of the building, to show their support to Mikalay Chigir. The relatives of the accused were not allowed into the building. Julia Chigir was brutally detained by the militia officers and tried to defend herself.

She was accused of an altercation with a militiaman outside the Minsk Court, for which she received a two-year suspended sentence.
