Siarhei Kavalenka arrested for 10 days

The Vitsebsk opposition activist spent three days before the trial in the detention center, having declared a hunger strike. He was taken into custody on December 24 – the day when a white-red-white flag appeared in Vitsebsk. Siarhei Kavalenka was brought to the courtroom in handcuffs, which particularly angered his relatives and human rights defenders.

Political activist Siarhiej Kavalenka was released from a prison a year ago. He spent two years in prison for having hung white-red-white flag on the Christmas tree standing in the central square of Vitebsk.

Responding to BelaPAN‘s question whether there were any appeals for pardon from the December 19 2010 convicts, Lukashenka said:

“I don’t know if they appealed. If they did, then the appeals should be in the pardon commission. We will keep you informed. They told me a month ago that there were two appeals,” he said. To the additional question on who exactly asked for pardon Lukashenka answered he didn’t know. ‘We’ll clarify this and tell you then,” he added.

Syarhei Kavalenka is serving 25 months imprisonment in a penal colony No 19 in Mogilev. – Belarusian authorities condemned him  for only one reason –   his love for Belarus and his solidarity with democratic values – says Alena Kavalenka.  According to Alena his health condition is life-threatening. Hunger strike, on which he had been for a few months, has led to irreversible changes in his body.
