Former political prisoner Mikhail Marynich dies

Former political prisoner and minister of foreign economic affairs of Belarus has died aged 74. This was announced by his son Ihar Marynich.

Mikhail Marynich was chairman of the Minsk City Executive Committee, member of the Supreme Council of the 12th convocation. In 1994, he was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary. Later he worked as minister of foreign economic relations of Belarus, ambassador to Latvia, Estonia and Finland.

In 2001, having written a resignation letter, Marynich announced his candidacy for the presidential election, but was not registered as a presidential candidate after he was not able to collect 100 thousand signatures. Later he headed the public organization “Business Initiative”.

On April 26, 2004 Marynich was arrested and soon sentenced to 5 years in prison and confiscation of property. The court found him guilty of stealing office equipment, which was actually donated to the organization by the United States Embassy in Belarus.

From April 2004 to April 2006, Mikhail Marynich was held in the special prison of the KGB, in Orsha and Minsk correctional facilities. On April 14, 2006, he was released early under an amnesty.

In 2006, Amnesty International declared Mikhail Marynich prisoner of conscience.

In October 2010, the UN Human Rights Committee found that Marynich was subjected to torture and the criminal case against him was political of political nature.
