Political prisoner Mikola Statkevich turns 57

Mikalai Statkevich is the last 2010 presidential candidate to be in prison. Today is his 57th birthday.

“One can support Mikola by sending a telegram with greetings, even without leaving home” – says Statkevich’s wife Maryna Adamovich. Maryna Adamovich appreciate any form of support: “You can send a letter or postcard, you can send a telegram via telephone”.

From Minsk, via line 166 one can simply send words of support to Mikola. I would appreciate any form of support. I’m sure Mykola will be pleased to receive words of support on his birthday ”

This is the third birthday that politician spends behind bars.

In January, 2012 Statkevich was transferred from Shklou penal colony No 17 to a closed prison, where conditions of confinement are much more severe. Such verdict was attained in the session of court which took place in the colony. According to its administration, Statkevich “failed to mend his ways” and “are not seeking to be released on parole”.

Alexander Lukashenko has repeatedly informed that his political opponents who found themselves in prison may be released, if they write petitions for clemency. According to Maryna Adamovich, her husband has been repeatedly  asked to write such an application. After his denials pressure on Statkievich increased.
