On July 9, Andrej Hajdukou’s lawyer Vadzim Mushynski appealed the court’s verdict at the Supreme Court of Belarus. The second complaint will be brought by Hajdukou himself in the near future.
On July 1 the civil activist from Navapolatsk Andrej Hajdukou was found guilty of attempting to establish cooperation with foreign intelligence and sentenced to 1.5 years in prison. The trial was held behind closed doors at the Vitebsk Regional Court. It is still unknown whether Andrej Hajdukou pleaded guilty or not.
Criminal charges were brought against Andrei Haidukou in early November 2012, when he was detained by the State Security Committee (KGB) agents and placed in the KGB detention center. On November 13, 2012, the State Security Committee disseminated information on the suppression of unlawful activity of a citizen of the Republic of Belarus, who was engaged by a foreign intelligence in the collection and transmission of information of political and economic nature. As a result, the detainee faced criminal charges under Par. 1, Art. 356 of the Criminal Code of Belarus (high treason in the form of intelligence activities). However, during the trial the charges were reclassified to Par. 1, Art. 14 and Art. 356-1 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus.
On July 1The Belarusian Helsinki Committee and the Human Rights Center “Viasna” recognized Andrej Hajdukou as a political prisoner; demanded to immediately release Andrej Haidukou, to overturn the illegal sentence imposed by the court and to guarantee its revision, subject to the right to a fair trial
